Each year we celebrate Garden Day in the spring, which means warm days with plenty of sunshine. Looking for a clever décor idea for your Garden Day party? Suzanne Kotze and Justine Kroes, the duo behind local lifestyle blog Stylvol, have just what you need!

Here they share how to create the most beautiful flower ice balls to place in your ice bucket. “We are always on the lookout for smart (and stylish) décor ideas for parties and get-togethers at home. These flower ice balls are quick and easy to make, and affordable,” the duo says. And you’re certain to get a “Wow!” from your guests.

You’ll need:

  • A selection of flowers

  • A pack of party balloons

TIP: There’s no need to go out and buy flowers. “Many of the flowers we used came from our gardens. We even picked a few wild flowers.”

Step 1

Before choosing your flowers, decide on your colour scheme. Bright, colourful flowers will look striking, while only using white flowers will look understated and elegant. Once you’ve gathered your flowers, cut the stem off each flower so that only the head remains.

Step 2

Stretch out the balloons as much as you can. Open the neck of the empty balloon as wide as possible, and insert the flower head into it.

TIP: For bigger flowers, get an extra hand to help out. One person can hold the balloon open, while the other carefully inserts the flower head.

Step 3

Now it’s time to fill the balloon with water. The best way to do this is to pull the balloon neck directly over the tap opening, and then open the tap gently. This ensures that the balloon gets filled quickly with minimal damage to the flower head inside. Once filled, carefully remove the balloon from the tap and tie the balloon.

TIP: Make sure there are no air bubbles in the balloon before you tie it. This will ensure that the water freezes into a ball.

Step 4

Place the filled flower balloon into the freezer. Try to position the top of the flower head away from the knot. After about 12 hours the ice balls will be fully frozen. Cut the knot off the balloon and remove the plastic to reveal your beautiful flower ice ball.

TIP: To fill a big ice bucket you’ll need about 15 to 20 flower balls. Use plain ice to fill up most of the ice bucket and arrange the flower ice balls on top. As the ice melts, the beautiful flowers inside unfolds.
